In Memoriam: Fr. Emmett P. Holmes, SJ

Let us pray in thanksgiving for the life of Fr. Emmett P. Holmes, SJ, who died on Thursday, March 24, 2016, at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Mich. He was 87 years old, a Jesuit for 69 years, and a priest for 56 years. May he rest in peace.

Emmett was born on August 5, 1928, in Lima, Ohio. He entered the Society of Jesus on June 16, 1946, at Milford Novitiate in Milford, Ohio, and, as a Jesuit, earned a bachelor's in Latin from Loyola University Chicago in 1951, a master's in French from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1963, and a Diplome de Culture Francaise from the Sorbonne in Paris in 1972. Emmett did his philosophy and theology studies at West Baden College in Indiana and was ordained a priest there on June 14, 1959. He pronounced final vows on August 15, 1977, in Cleveland, Ohio.

 

During his regency from 1953-1956, Emmett taught Latin and French at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati. After his ordination, he taught French at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland from 1961-1971 and again from 1972-1980. He also served as rector there from 1974-1980.

 

After a sabbatical, Emmett moved to Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, where he worked from 1981-2013. Over the course of these 30+ years, Emmett was a retreat director from 1981-1995, a French teacher from 1981-2004, school chaplain from 1988-1993, faculty and staff spiritual director from 1993-2004, rector from 1993-1998, chaplain to the faculty and athletic teams from 2004-2013, and acting superior from 2007-2009.
