William J. Kidd

Let us pray in thanksgiving for the life of Fr. William J. Kidd, SJ, who died on March 3, 2020, at St. Camillus Jesuit Community in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He was 86 years old. May he rest in peace.

Bill was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on August 29, 1933. After completing grade school in various places as his family moved around, he graduated from Marquette High School in Milwaukee and entered the Society on August 8, 1950. Bill had the usual Wisconsin Jesuit course of studies at St. Stanislaus Seminary, St. Louis University, and St. Mary's College. He was ordained on June 11, 1964, made tertianship in Decatur, Illinois, and pronounced his final vows on August 15, 1967.

Bill earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy (1956), a licentiate degree in philosophy (1957), and a licentiate degree in theology (1965) from St. Louis University. He also earned a master's degree in mathematics from Marquette University (1966) and a master's degree in business administration from Creighton University (1979).

Bill did regency at Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge. After ordination he taught math at Campion High School in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin (1966-1974), before spending five years as treasurer at Creighton Prep in Omaha. In 1979, he moved to Milwaukee where he worked in various financial and IT assignments at Marquette University: assistant in the finance office (1979-1992); associate director of institution research (1992-1994); network consultant (1998-2004); and technical support specialist (2004-2015). He also was assistant to the Wisconsin Province treasurer (1994-1998). In 2015, Bill was missioned to St. Camillus Jesuit Community to pray for the Church and the Society, though he continued part-time work at Marquette University.

Bill was a quiet but extremely productive Jesuit. Apart from the Society's regular course of studies, usually while holding down another full-time job, Bill earned a Master's degree in math from Marquette University, an MBA from Creighton University, and made himself an expert in a number of different Information Technology (I.T.) areas. He had a surprisingly large number of hobbies and interests (and at one time held high office in the Ferret Fanciers Association of South Eastern Wisconsin). He was a good companion to those who got to know him. He was proud to be a Jesuit.

Knew his as a math instructor at Campion. Kind and patient with freshmen learning algebra and a good floor supervisor in the dorms.Quiet but productive is a good summation. – Andy Barnett

I had the pleasure of working with Father Kidd only a few times, years ago, but he made such an impression! He was so upbeat and certainly made one feel very much at ease. We once had the most interesting discussion about the Latin language while working on MAC computer problems. He was wonderfully tech-savvy, far into advanced age, and had such a collaborative approach to matters at hand. His good attitude inspired me then, and still to this day.
