Fr. J. Thomas McClain, SJ, a Detroit native, has served as the General Treasurer of the Society of Jesus at its headquarters in Rome for the last seven years. In this role he oversees the finances and civil legal matters of the Jesuits throughout the world.
Prior to his present appointment, Fr. McClain served as the pastor of St. Mary’s Student Parish and director of Catholic campus ministry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (2005-2009); as president of Regis High School in New York City (1996-2004); and as Treasurer of the Detroit Province (1992-1996). Before that, he held a number of teaching and leadership positions in the Province and its institutions, including serving as Superior of several Jesuit communities.
In 2016, Fr. McClain was a delegate for the Society of Jesus' General Congregation 36, the supreme governing body of the order. He was among the 200 plus delegates from around the world that elected Father Arturo Sosa as the 31st Superior General of the Society of Jesus.
A graduate of Gesu School, U of D Jesuit High School and the University of Detroit, Fr. McClain also earned a master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley in German Literature, and a Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. Father McClain entered the Jesuit order in 1967 and was ordained a priest in 1977.
