Soloman, Louis E. (Father)

Jesuit Father Louis E. Soloman died on Dec. 3, 2015, at Murray-Weigel Hall in the Bronx, New York. He was 85 years old.

Fr. Soloman was born in Brooklyn, New York, on Nov. 25, 1930, son of Helen Merrill and Earl Soloman. He attended St. Luke High School and on Sept. 7, 1951, entered Ignatius College in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. In 1955, Fr. Soloman studied philosophy at Loyola Seminary in Shrub Oak, New York.

From 1958-1961, Fr. Soloman was assigned to Fordham Prepartory in the Bronx as a teacher of Latin and mathematics. He then went on to study theology at Woodstock College in Maryland from 1961-1965. Fr. Soloman was ordained a priest on June 18, 1964, at Fordham University Chapel in the Bronx, New York. After his final year of formation, Fr. Soloman went on to lead the Spiritual Exercises at Gonzaga Retreat House in Monroe, New York. In 1967, Fr. Soloman went to Zambia where he became a teacher of Latin and mathematics (Mpima Minor Sem.) until 1972.

Fr. Soloman returned to New York City in 1972, and taught mathematics at Xavier High School. In 1975, Fr. Soloman became pastoral minister at Fordham Hospital in the Bronx for one year and then became pastoral minister/chaplain at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Staten Island for 14 years. In 1992, Fr. Soloman was assistant director of JSMB at 83rd Street and in 1995 became a resident of Murray-Weigel Hall, praying for the Society.
