In Memoriam

Jesuit Father Thomas P. Martin died on April 14, 2016, having lived at Manresa Hall in Philadelphia since 2011. He was 81.

Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on Sept. 22, 1934, Fr. Martin graduated from Scranton Prep and entered the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, Pennsylvania in September 1952. He studied physics at St. Andrew on the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, NY, and received his bachelor’s from Loyola Seminary in Shrub Oak, New York. He also received a master’s in teaching from Loyola Seminary and a degree in Sacred Theology from Woodstock College. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1966.

As a Jesuit scholastic, Fr. Martin taught math at Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C. and Loyola High School in Baltimore, Maryland. After being ordained, he became Parochial Vicar at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, serving for nearly 15 years. He then began what would become his longest assignment, Assistant Province Treasurer for the Maryland Province Jesuits from 1983 to 2008. The last six of these years, he also served as Manager of Investment Reporting.

In 2008, Fr. Martin moved to the Colombiere Jesuit Community in Baltimore where he worked as the Community Treasurer until his final assignment, praying for the Church and the Society of Jesus at Manresa Hall.
