Filice, Peter F. (Father)

Jesuit Father Peter F. Filice, age 73, died Oct. 1, 2013, at El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos, Calif. Fr. Filice was born in San Jose on July 11, 1940, and was raised in Gilroy, Calif. He attended Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, Calif., and entered the Jesuit novitiate at Los Gatos in 1958.

His training for the priesthood was done at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., and the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif. He was ordained to the priesthood in San Francisco on June 5, 1971. During his course of studies he taught Latin and French at Loyola High School in Los Angeles (1965-68).

Fr. Filice’s ministry over the years was varied. He was engaged in both direct pastoral ministry and administration on the province and local community level. He served as executive assistant to the Provincial of the California Jesuits (1971-74 and 1985-89), Rector-President of Loyola High School in Los Angeles (1975-81), and administrator of the Jesuit communities at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley (1981-84), the Jesuit novitiate in Santa Barbara, Calif. (1989-93), and at Santa Clara University (1993-2004). He was the Superior of the Loyola High School community, 2006-2012.

His pastoral ministry included campus ministry at St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, and at Santa Clara University. He was director of adult spirituality at Loyola High School during his term as superior and was briefly a retreat director at Jesuit Retreat Center in Los Altos, Calif. Fr. Filice was a fine administrator who distinguished himself in his many assignments. He was generous, kind and compassionate, a good teacher and a wonderful cook. He is survived by his sister, Louise Vita (Garry) of Gilroy. He was predeceased by a brother, Anthony.
