In Memoriam

Jesuit Father James A. Borbely passed away on Aug. 1, 2016, at the Jesuit Community of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, Pennsylvania. He was 72.

Fr.  Borbely was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on July 25, 1944. After graduating from St. Joseph’s College with a degree in English, he entered the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville in 1970. He received a master’s degree in human behavior from the U.S. International University in San Diego and then went on to receive his Bachelor of Sacred Theology and Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology in Chicago. He was ordained a priest on June 5, 1976.

Through the late 70’s and early 80’s, Fr. Borbely served as assistant director and acting director of the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth in Wernersville. He then served as associate pastor for a year at Old St. Joseph’s Church in Philadelphia before becoming retreat director at Manresa-on-Severn in Annapolis. Throughout the 90’s, Fr. Borbely taught and counseled the Spiritual Exercises at Loyola Center in Philadelphia. He returned to the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth in Wernersville in 1997 as assistant director, organizational consultant and minister. In 2004, he served for two years as an organizational consultant at Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C.

Most recently, Fr. Borbely served as assistant director of Pax Christi USA and as a national ecclesial assistant for Christian Life Communities (CLC). His health declined earlier this year, and he passed away on August 1, 2016 at the Jesuit Community of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, PA. He was 72.
