Society of Jesus Ordains 18 New Jesuit Deacons

September 7, 2016 — Eighteen Jesuits were ordained as deacons recently at Masses in Boston, Montreal, and Toronto. For Jesuits in formation, ordination to the diaconate is the final step in preparation for priestly ordination in the Society of Jesus.

On May 28, Cyril Pinchak, SJ, was ordained to the diaconate in the Byzantine rite at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God in Toronto by the Most Reverend John Michael Kudrick, bishop emeritus of Parma for the Byzantines. On August 20, two Jesuits were ordained as deacons at the Church of the Gesù in Montreal by Most Reverend Terrence Prendergast, SJ, archbishop of Ottawa.

Fifteen Jesuits, along with two Capuchins, were ordained on September 3 at the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola on the Boston College campus by Most Reverend Robert F. Hennessey, auxiliary bishop of Boston. These men are currently studying theology at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry.
