DETROIT – The Board of Directors of University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy has announced that Fr. Theodore (Ted) Munz, SJ, will become the school’s 29th president. Father Munz will replace current president, Fr. Karl Kiser, SJ, who will receive a new Jesuit assignment at the end of the current school year. Father Kiser has served at U of D Jesuit for 14 years and has overseen tremendous growth at the school.

“Today is another important day in the proud history and tradition of U of D Jesuit,” said Henry B. Cooney, U of D Jesuit Board president and 1969 alumnus of the school.

“We are extremely fortunate to have had a tremendous leader in Fr. Karl Kiser for the past 14 years, and we look forward to moving ahead with another great leader, Fr. Ted Munz, at the helm. Father Munz brings a wealth of leadership and educational experience, and as a Jesuit, he has a unique ability to lead the school in the tradition of Jesuit education.”

Born and raised in the Cincinnati area, Fr. Munz attended St. Xavier High School, also a Jesuit school. He attended the University of Detroit, where he earned a bachelors in philosophy. He holds a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago and graduate degrees in theology from the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, Calif.

Father Munz was the team leader for the founding of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago from 1994-1996. He served as president of Loyola Academy in suburban Chicago from 1996-2009. Later, he served as treasurer of the Midwest Jesuits. Currently, Fr. Munz serves the Jesuit Community at the University of Detroit Mercy.

"I am humbled to accept the presidency of U of D Jesuit, a pillar of Jesuit education in the City of Detroit for 139 years,” said Fr. Munz. “I have a special affinity for the school, having had my first teaching experience here in 1976, and I have a great fondness for the City of Detroit and metro area from the time of my early formation here as a Jesuit in the 1970s. A Jesuit education is unique, and we must set a high bar for our students in their formation as young men who are religious, intellectually competent, loving, open to growth, and committed to justice. We must also prepare our students to be leaders in service, particularly to those most in need. I look forward to serving our students, our community, and our mission.”

“We congratulate University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy on the appointment of Father Ted Munz as their next president,” said Fr. Brian Paulson, SJ, provincial of the Chicago-Detroit Province. “Father Munz brings strong experience in high school leadership and creative vision for the ongoing success of the mission of U of D Jesuit. He is an outstanding educator and priest, committed to the Jesuit mission and life of the school.”

Father Munz will take over the presidency on July 1, 2016. A farewell celebration to honor Fr. Karl Kiser will be held at the end of the current school year.
