Jesuit Father Herbert J. Raterman died on Oct. 9, 2013, at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Mich. Fr. Raterman was born on July 6, 1924, in Cincinnati. He entered the Society of Jesus on Sept. 1, 1942, at Milford, Ohio.

Jesuit Father Herbert J. Raterman died on Oct. 9, 2013, at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Mich. Fr. Raterman was born on July 6, 1924, in Cincinnati. He entered the Society of Jesus on Sept. 1, 1942, at Milford, Ohio. He was ordained on June 15, 1955, at West Baden College in southern Indiana, and took final vows on Aug. 15, 1959. Fr. Raterman attended Elder and St. Xavier High Schools in Cincinnati. He graduated from St. Xavier and joined the Jesuits in 1942.  As a Jesuit, Fr. Raterman earned a Bachelor's Degree in English from Loyola University Chicago. He also took summer counseling courses at Xavier University, the University of Detroit, and Loyola University Chicago (1958-1965).

During regency, Fr. Raterman taught Latin and English at St. Ignatius High School in Chicago (1949-1952). After ordination, he taught religion and was a student counselor at St. Ignatius High School in Chicago (1957-1959) and St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati (1959-1969). Fr. Raterman taught sex education at St. Xavier High School (1965-1969, 1970-1972), Summit High School in Cincinnati (1969-1970), for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati (1972-1973), and at Xavier University (1973-1984). In addition, Fr. Raterman also did retreat and pastoral ministry at St. Xavier High School (1970-1973), Xavier University (1973-1990), and Faber House in Cincinnati (1990-2005).

Fr. Raterman wrote a book based on his sex education course, titled Charity and Sex and the Young Man. He was also the moderator of the radio program "Moments of Reparation" from 1979-2005. Fr. Raterman was an active member of the Colombiere Center Jesuit Community since moving there in 2005.
