Died 22 July 2014

Jesuit Father Patrick J. Malone died on July 22, 2014, in hospice care in Omaha, Nebraska.  He was 55 years old, a Jesuit for 21 years and a priest for 13 years.

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Feb. 13, 1959, Fr. Malone attended grade school and high school in St. Paul. He graduated from the University of St. Thomas in 1981 and then spent some years with the Peace Corps in Mali before earning an MBA from the University of Wisconsin in 1986.  Fr. Malone entered the Society at the St. Paul Jesuit Novitiate on Aug. 22, 1992.  At Spokane and Berkeley he had the usual Jesuit course of studies; was ordained on June 8, 2001; made tertianship in Weston, Massachusetts; and pronounced his final vows on Sept. 28, 2011.

Fr. Malone taught at Marquette High School during regency, but his assignments after ordination were all in pastoral ministry.  Following the September 11 terrorist attacks, Fr. Malone spent six weeks ministering to the needs of recovery workers at ground zero.  For three years he was an associate pastor at the Church of St. Luke in St. Paul, and he worked in campus ministry at Macalester College in St. Paul.  Fr. Malone spent several years as the spiritual coordinator of the Creighton University ILAC program in the Dominican Republic.  In 2009 Fr. Malone moved to Omaha and began work at St. John's Parish; in 2011 he became the pastor of St. John's.

Fr. Malone was a very gifted and successful pastor who, for much of his adult life, periodically struggled with serious health issues. Even after several bone-marrow transfusions to deal with his leukemia, he was hospitalized a number of times with life-threatening infections and immune-system issues. Fr. Malone never let his illness define him but focused on ministering to the people he was called to serve.
