James E. Mauel

Father James E. Mauel, SJ, died on March 17, 2014, at St. Camillus Jesuit Community in Wauwatosa, Wis. He was 88 years old, a Jesuit for 69 years, and a priest for 56 years.

Born in La Crosse, Wis., on October 31, 1925, Fr. Mauel attended grade school and high school in Cashton, Wis. After a year at Marquette University in Milwaukee, he entered the Society of Jesus on June 22, 1944, at St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant, Mo. Father Mauel had the usual Jesuit course of studies at St. Stanislaus, Saint Louis University, and St. Mary's College. He did regency at Holy Rosary Mission and St. Louis University High School. Father Mauel was ordained on June 12, 1957, made tertianship in 1958 and 1959 and professed his final vows on August 15, 1960.

After ordination, he taught Latin and Greek for eight years at Marquette University and at Jesuit College in St. Bonifacius, Minn. In 1961 and 1962, he served in Rome as the substitute secretary for the American Assistancy and, from 1968 through 1981, as secretary to the provincial in the Wisconsin Province Office in Milwaukee. From 1982 through 2010, Fr. Mauel ministered as a spiritual and retreat director in Milwaukee. He moved to St. Camillus in 2010.
