Let us pray in thanksgiving for the life of Fr. Edward (Ed) A. Flint, SJ, who died on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Mich. He was 79 years old, a Jesuit for 55 years, and a priest for 47 years. May he rest in peace.

Ed was born on July 23, 1936, in Detroit. He graduated from the University of Detroit High School in 1954. Before entering the Society of Jesus, he earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1958, and a master's degree in philosophy in 1960, from the University of Detroit. Ed entered the Society on September 1, 1960, at Colombiere College in Clarkston. He was ordained a priest in Clarkston on May 31, 1969, and pronounced final vows on March 19, 1976, at the University of Detroit. As a Jesuit, Ed earned a Licentiate in Philosophy from St. Louis University in 1964, a Master of Divinity from Bellarmine School of Theology in North Aurora, Ill., and master's degree in marriage and counseling from the University of Detroit in 1978.

Ed served the people of God in many ways, including as a teacher and counselor. During his regency, from 1964-1966, and again from 1971-1975, he taught English and theology at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland. Ed served as a counselor for many years at the Westside Community Health Center in Cleveland (1979-1981) and Saint Ignatius High School (1980-1983), and as a substance abuse counselor at Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center in Bethel, Alaska.

Ed also used his business skills to help others. He assisted in building maintenance (1981-1986) and served as the assistant treasurer (1983-1986) at Saint Ignatius High School. He was the village services manager at the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation from 1993-1994, and he was also the business manager for the Detroit Jesuit Province Office from 1997-2000.

Ed spent much of his Jesuit life performing pastoral ministry at the following places: St. Mary of the Assumption in Toledo, Ohio (1987-1989); St. Joseph Church in Nome, Alaska (1989-1990); pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Marshall, Alaska (1994-1996); Pilot Station and Russian Mission in Marshall (1994-1996); Holy Rosary - St. John Catholic Church in Columbus, Ohio (2000-2003), where he was also superior of the Jesuit community; and Gesu Roman Catholic Parish in Toledo (2003-2004). He was also a chaplain at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse in Oxford, Mich., from 2004-2007. After moving to Colombiere Center in 2007, Ed continued to perform pastoral ministry until health issues prevented him from doing so.

Ed was a Jesuit available for mission, whether in the province office or Alaska. He had a penchant for working with the underdog and those most in need of help. He was a terrific teacher, tough but extremely capable.
