Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
Manresa Jesuit Retreat House, located 16 miles north of Detroit in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., offers retreatants a respite from the city on its 37–acre campus with almost 50,000 trees. A nature trail through the woods circles the grounds. Some of the land is along the main branch of the young Rouge River, which traverses the property.
Waterfowl, geese, mallards and the great blue heron are among the variety of wildlife that may be found on the grounds. On the right day retreatants might see snapping turtles laying their eggs or baby turtles hatching and heading for the water.
Manresa is a place of prayer that seeks to help people grow in their spiritual life through group and individually directed retreats, which are scheduled year-round. Other forms of prayer may also be available during a group retreat, such as Mass, the rosary, reconciliation, Benediction, Stations of the Cross and eucharistic adoration. Retreats are open to Christians of all denominations, and retreatants are free to attend any of the offerings that agree with their own religious practices.
Other offerings at Manresa include the Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life (which may be completed at home over a period of about nine months), retreats adapted for special groups or topics, prayer services, reading seminars, workshops, spiritual direction, days of prayer and a two-year internship program in Ignatian spirituality. The center and its conference facilities are also used by other religious and educational groups.
