Saint Thomas More Catholic Community

St. Paul, Minnesota

Saint Thomas More Catholic Community, founded on January 1, 2008, is the union of two Catholic parishes: the Church of Saint Luke (1888) and the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (1949). The rich heritage from these two communities of faith has blessed them with over 125 years of Catholic worship, community and ministry in this historic area of St. Paul, Minn. Construction on the current church took place between 1924 and 1926, and the church was dedicated in October 1926.

Our Mission: Rooted in the Gospels and formed by Ignatian spirituality, the mission of the Catholic Community of Saint Thomas More is to glorify God by our lives.

Our Vision:  Saint Thomas More is the Jesuit parish of the Twin Cities. We are a community where all are welcome. Nourished by the Word and the Eucharist,  we proclaim the Good News and help each other grow closer to Christ. We are called to act justly, to love mercy, and to build the City of god here and now.

Our Goals:

1) Help one another encounter and deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ.

2) Increase registered parishioners and their participation in our parish.

3) Be an active presence for justice and love in our parish, our neighborhoods, our cities, our country, and the world.

4) Serve as the nucleus for Jesuit spirituality and Jesuit-sponsored activities in the Twin Cities.

Our Parish School: Saint Thomas More Catholic School was also created in 2008 by the merger of the two parishes. Historically, each parish operated separate schools until they joined their schools in 1991 as IHM-St. Luke’s School. While the school’s name is new, their 100-plus year commitment to high quality education remains firmly in place.

Our Holy Family Apartment: On March 25, 2017, St. Thomas More became the second Jesuit parish in the nation to declare itself a sanctuary parish, following another in San Francisco. It is the first Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis to declare itself a sanctuary parish; it is the second Catholic church in Minnesota.

Saint Thomas More provides a comfortable and safe apartment to those threatened by deportation and offers companionship, food, clothing and connection to additional resources such as legal aid as each family may need. Fr. Warren, pastor of Saint Thomas More said, "We did it not to make a political statement. It is a statement of faith, to provide shelter to people who need it and to connect them to resources.”

Our community acknowledges and respects the federal government’s obligation to protect our borders and uphold our immigration laws. Nevertheless, we agree with the U.S. Catholic Bishops Conference that immigration principles should always be at the service of human dignity and the common good of society. Saint Thomas More Catholic Community is committed to increasing its advocacy for just and humane immigration reform at both the local and national level.
